Peace for Asia held a webinar on the role of the EU in Sri Lanka with the current EU Ambassador to Sri Lanka Denis Chaibi.
Denis Chaibi started his diplomatic career in 1993 at the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and moved later to the European Commission, and worked on trade, EU enlargement, South Asia, humanitarian assistance and crisis response, and the nuclear deal with Iran. He had postings in Spain, Cyprus and the USA, and has degrees in Law, Political science, Masters degrees in European Studies, International Law and an LLM from Cambridge University. He was a lecturer at various universities, including Yale.

 

Ambassador Chaibi discussed the role of the EU and the EU delegation in Sri Lanka. He addressed the EU’s social and development initiatives in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the present crisis was discussed, with an overview of the causes and potential perspectives.
The webinar also tackled the topic of international influence on Sri Lanka. We discussed whether considering Sri Lankan debt, EU and allies could design economic packages for SL and other small countries to prevent small counties from falling into such crisis. Lastly, the webinar addressed the human rights in Sri Lanka and the importance of trade for international relations.
